Have you got a blocked drain after heavy rain? After the heavy rain we’ve had a lot more call outs to clear blockages and repair drains. If excess rainwater has nowhere to go, the resulting standing water can affect a property’s foundations as well as its sewage and septic systems.

Blocked drains can be caused by a number of issues. Heavy rain can place an additional stress on drainage systems resulting in damage your drainage system and ultimately your property.

BROKEN PIPES

Large amounts of rain water can disturb the soil surrounding a drain or pipe putting immense strain on the drain and in some instances causing a breakage or crack. If you drain is compromised and develops a crack, dirt, leaves and debris can enter the system and clog up your drain causing damage and flooding.

BLOCKED DRAINS

Drains are not capable of managing high volumes of water if they are partially or completely blocked. During dry months you may find that seeds start to germinate in gutters, which under the right conditions can grow into plants.  In normal weather conditions gutters blocked with small plants can cope with rainfall, but in heavy rainfall these small blockages can shift and move to areas in the drain that will collect and build up, particularly on bends.  The resulting blockage can cause your drains to back up and flood. If drains and guttering are not maintained, heavy rain water can flush additional debris and leaves into the drain causing a build up and ultimately a blockage which can cause flooding and damage to your property.

FLOODING

During or after heavy rain if the water can’t drain away flooding can occur. Standing water can cause permanent damage to your home or premises foundations.  Excess water should be removed as soon as possible with a sump pump and the area allowed to dry.
