What is a self priming pump?

A self priming pump is a centrifugal pump with external casing that floods the inner pump and uses a mixture of air and water to create a primed pumping state. These pumps stayed primed and are ideal to use for water supply where a suction head is required; they can mix water and air to create a pumpable fluid. Self priming pumps are designed to clear air and start pumping without intervention. The self priming pump is able to retain water after the very first prime. This provides increased operating efficiencies where pumps are used intermittently.

Applications for self priming pumps

Self-priming pumps are typically used when the pump has to be located above the level of the liquid to be pumped. A self-priming pump is able to evacuate air from the suction line without intervention, which consequently allows liquid to be drawn into the pump and operate effectively. Self priming pumps are used for pumping water,  sewage and industrial wastewater, water pressure boosting, water transfer and irrigation in a variety of environments including:

  • Household
  • Light commercial applications
  • Agricultural applications
  • Sewage Lift Stations (Pump Stations)
  • Dewatering
  • Construction Operations
  • Mining Operations
  • Pumping Stormwater

How do self priming pumps work?

Self priming pumps work by drawing air into the pump by creating low pressure through the movement of the impeller. Liquid is then mixed with the air. This process takes place in the external casing – atmospheric pressure causes the water to be  pushed up the suction pipe, forcing the air in the suction line into the pump. The air will rise and the water will sink – the air free water then flows back into the impeller chamber to mix with more air flowing into the suction line. When all the air has evacuated a vacuum is created forcing water up the suction line to the impeller – this is when pumping commences.  When the pumping beings the water re-circulation will cease.  Re circulation of water within the pump stops when pumping begins.

Advantages Of Self Priming Pumps

  • Suitable to handling solids up to 3 inches
  • Fluids can be pumped whilst pump is outside of pit
  • Mounted at ground level makes them easier to maintain & repair.
  • No mechanical equipment in the wet well negates the requirement for hoists or cranes.
