TACKLING YOUR BLOCKED DRAIN

Our drain cleaning team use a variety of tools in order to clear your blocked drainpipe in the most efficient way possible. In addition to our cleaning services we also install and repair drain systems. Our services include excavation or structural drain lining for effective drain repair.

Your Local Blocked Drain Experts

There are many reasons why your drain can become blocked between your property and the main drainage network.  Our drainage engineers will identify the cause, clear the blockage and advise the best course of action to avoid future issues.

Debris

One of the major causes of blocked drains is wet wipes. Wet wipes (or baby wipes) are not designed to disintegrate like toilet paper, so when they are disposed of in the toilet they clogged up the sewer system.  When flushed a wipe can get snagged on other debris within your drainage system and accumulate in bends. The resulting blockage can lead to a sewage leak which would impact the local environment and cause costly damage.

Even wipes labelled ‘flushable’ or ‘biodegradable’ can cause an issue as the length of time it would take to break down is far longer than standard sanitary debris. Water companies advise to only ever flush the 3 P’s into your drainage system – Pee, Poo & Paper!

The fastest way to clear debris from your system is through drain jetting.  Our specialist jetting team have all the equipment necessary to clear debris from your drains with manual disruption.

Grease Build Up

In domestic kitchens, grease and fat is often washed down the sink and can accumulate in your drainage system resulting in a blockage.

Even if grease or oils aren’t directly poured into the sink, just washing greasy dishes or using hand soap (which is often made of animal or vegetable fats) can build up a residue of grease in your drains which will eventually lead to blockage or slow flowing drains.

ROOT INGRESS

Tree roots and plants are attracted to water. Over time roots can grow through the smallest crack or join in a drainage system and cause further damage to the pipework.  As a result, your drain can become blocked or even collapse due to the expanding root systems.

Our specialist equipment can remove root intrusion and restore the flow of your drains.

CRACKED OR BROKEN DRAIN

Your drain can become cracked or damaged through root ingress, extreme temperature changes, pressure changes and earth movement. If a drain is cracked, soil and debris can enter the drainage system causing a blockage.

As specialists in drain repairs, we can install a drain lining that bonds to the inside of your pipe to ensure your drains are sealed. Drain lining is a cost-effective and non-invasive alternative to excavating and replacing damaged drains.

Offset Pipe

Occasionally an elbow or join in your drainage system can become ‘offset’ – this is when the joins in your pipes are not connected properly and are misaligned due to earth movement or damage.  When the join is exposed debris can enter your drainage system and cause a bottleneck.  Any waste flowing through your drains will get caught at the offset, resulting in the drain becoming blocked.

The Alton Pump Services team can excavate and repair offset pipes – restoring the efficiency of your drains and allowing them to flow freely again.

Sewer Line Belly

A lateral drain requires a slope to harness gravity to regulate flow. Bellies or low areas can develop due to erosion, settlement, or incorrect installation.  If there are low spots in your drain, solids can build slowing the flow of waste which will eventually cause an obstruction and result in sewage backing up.

A CCTV survey will help to locate a sagging drain, our drainage team can then advise the appropriate remedial work to resolve the issue.

Who Is Responsible For Your Drains?

A blocked drain should be treated as an emergency; if wastewater cannot drain it is potentially dangerous or harmful to human health and the environment. If you are a homeowner, a tenant in a rented property, or a landlord you may need to check who is responsible for the drains in and surrounding your property.

Blocked Soakaways & Septic Tanks

If you are not on mains drainage and have a septic tank, cesspit or soakaway it will require regular tanker services to empty effluent and remove solids. Occasionally your system may get blocked – there are some common signs that will alert you to a potential blockage:

Signs Of a Blocked Septic Tank

  • Waterlogged ground/grass growing greener
  • Bad odors coming from septic tanks or drains.
  • Slow flushing toilets
  • Gurgling sounds from the drains.
  • Drains backing up

Blocked Gully

Drain gullies are an important part of your drainage system. Gullies are underground basins designed to receive water from your property from your kitchen or bathroom. From here the wastewater enters the drains.

Gullies can be affected by debris like leaves and soil. Once your gully is compromised it can cause issues with your drainage and eventually a blockage.  Debris should be cleared immediately to damage to your drainage system and property.

The Alton Pump Services team can use a variety of methods to clear your blocked drain or gully. Get in touch with us today to have your drain cleared on 01420 561661.
