What is a centrifugal pump?

Centrifugal pumps are used to induce flow or raise a liquid from a low level to a high level and are often used in oil refineries, power plants, by water service authorities. Their main purpose is to transfer fluids through an increase in pressure. These pumps are highly efficient for moving large volumes of liquid. They are also used to increase water pressure in homes.  Centrifugal pumps are typically suitable for use when little or no suction lift is required.

Pump Supply

Advantages of centrifugal pumps

  • Simplicity – Centrifugal Pumps have few valves and moving parts requiring less maintenance
  • Size – Centrifugal Pumps are generally smaller and lighter than reciprocating pumps allowing for a wider range of use.
  • Greater discharging capacity than reciprocating pumps
  • Long Service Life
  • Able to work medium to low head
  • Able to work medium to low viscous fluid

Centrifugal Pump Installation

The Alton Pump Services specialist team will install centrifugal pumps for domestic, commercial and industrial premises. From the simple to the complex, our engineers have the knowledge, and also the experience, to provide an efficient and professional installation.

Centrifugal Pump Servicing

Well maintained pumps run more efficiently and consequently can reduce your energy consumption by up to 50% and reduce the chance of an unexpected breakdown.

At Alton Pump Services we provide sewage pump service and maintenance to help your pump maintain optimum performance levels.  A typical pump service would include:

  • Cleaning and emptying out the pump.
  • Removing any blockages.
  • Carry out any checks to see if there are any defects in the pumping system to ensure that is in full working order.

We also provide ongoing service contracts to help maintain the efficiency of your pump giving you priority response, parts and labour. Our team of engineers are experienced in both domestic and commercial pump servicing.

Centrifugal Pump Repair

In the unfortunate event of a pump breakdown Alton Pump Services can provide emergency pump repair – fast.  We stock a wide variety of replacement pump parts and will carry out repairs onsite whenever possible to avoid disruption to your work.

Our dedicated team of pump engineers provides as little disruption as possible and will work to get your pump back up and running again.

How do centrifugal pumps work?

Centrifugal pumps use a rotating impeller (usually motorized) to impart velocity to a liquid converting it to a flow. The engineering is based on a rotating impeller, which converts kinetic energy into pressure or velocity through the transfer of rotational energy from one or more driven rotors, called impellers. The liquid enters the pump at the center of the impeller (eye) rotation  and, owing to centrifugal force, moves to the impeller periphery. The liquid being pumped enters continuously through the pump’s suction nozzle. The action of the impeller increases the fluid’s velocity by rotation both tangentially and radially. In this way the liquid acquires kinetic energy until, under pressure, it exits the pump at the outlet. The casing is of the pump is equipped with suction and discharge nozzles for the liquid being pumped. Centrifugal pumps are typically used for high flow rate with low viscosity fluids, such a solids.

Types Of Centrifugal Impellers

Channel Impeller

A channel impeller works directly on the pumped liquid allowing the liquid to pass through the impeller. The impeller can have one or more channels of varying size allowing for free passage of impurities up to a particular size. This type of impeller has approx. 3-4 blades. Typically the blades have a double backwards curve and a radial movement. These impellers are comparatively much less efficient since the liquid is not guided as well due to the limited number of blades however, this type of impeller enables the creation of internal channels with a large opening through which waste water, containing suspended solids can pass through.

Vortex Impeller

This type of impeller is fitted with 9 blades with a simple backwards curve. The impeller creates a revolving mass of water forming a whirlpool (or vortex).

Spiral Vane Impeller

The spiral vane impeller is designed for use with dense and highly viscose liquids, or with solutions containing large amounts of dry residue. The impeller is fitted with two or four blades depending on the viscosity or pastiness of the liquid being pumped.
