Over the last 12 months Alton Pump Services has been the principle contractor in the refurbishment of the Visitor Centre, Cafe and toilet block at Newlands Corner, Guildford, Surrey. So we were delighted that last week that The Queen’s Baton Relay stopped outside the centre ahead of the Commonwealth Games, and the Baton was temporarily put on display for visitors. The Baton contains a written message to the Commonwealth from The Queen. Helyn Clack, chair of Surrey County Council, addressed the crowd from outside the visitor centre, located in the Surrey Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB), which proved to be the perfect backdrop for the event.
British Olympic swimmer Alicia Wilson, 22, and former Great Britain field hockey player Sarah Evans, 31, took turns carrying the Baton in this leg of the relay supported by children from local schools.
Alton Pump Services has been busy in the build up to the day. The scope of the work included design and installation of new mains water supply and waste drainage in accordance with current regulations:
- Install new mains water supply
- Supply and install foul water pumping station and rising main
- Toilet Block – complete refurbishment and redecoration
- Visitors Centre – Refurbishment and redecoration to provide updated information hub.
- Demolition of old brick built pumping station.
The Commonwealth Games, will begin in Birmingham on 28 July – we wish all the competitors the best of luck!
