Tripped pumps and broken float brackets in Wokingham

On a planned service visit in Wokingham, both pumps had tripped. The engineer found that the float rail brackets had corroded and snapped, leaving the floats in the operating position.

The visit

The visit was a service of two Xylem AS06/30 pumps as part of a service care agreement. Both pumps had tripped when the engineer arrived.

What was found

Inspection showed that the float rail brackets had corroded and snapped. That left the float switches submerged and in the operating position. This would make the pumps run continuously until they overheat, and then trip on their fail-safe.

Testing and the temporary fix

Both pumps were tested and both gave maximum readings. The panel was reset, and the floats were hung as well as possible until new brackets can be fitted.

An alarm fault

Further tests showed everything working except the audible high-level alarm. The light worked, but the panel made no sound. The wires for the audible alarm appear to have been used to operate the high-level beacon, so the panel needs rewiring for both to work as they should.

Recorded outcome

  • Cause found: corroded float rail brackets had snapped.
  • Pumps tested: both gave maximum readings.
  • Temporary measure: the panel was reset and the floats hung until new brackets are fitted.
  • Alarm fault recorded: the audible alarm was silent, and the panel wiring needs correcting.
