Common sump pump problems

  • The pump runs but the sump does not empty
  • The pump does not start when the water rises
  • The float is stuck or catching on the pump or pipework
  • The pump runs all the time or starts and stops often
  • Water coming back into the sump after the pump stops
  • No alarm or back-up if the pump fails

How we fix a sump pump

  1. Check the sump

We check the pump, float or level switch, non-return valve, discharge pipework and the electrics.

  2. Explain the options

Repair, replacement or an upgrade such as a second pump or alarm. You get a written quote before any work starts.

  3. Repair or replace

We fix the fault or fit a new pump matched to the job.

  4. Test and report

The pump is tested through its full cycle and you get a report with photos.

Protecting a basement

In a basement or cellar, a single pump with no alarm is a weak point. A high-level alarm warns you before water rises too far, and a second pump gives back-up if one fails.

We work on all makes of sump and submersible pump, including Grundfos, Wilo, DAB, Pedrollo, Zoeller, Tsurumi and Ebara. We also replace pumps in rainwater-harvesting tanks.

Questions

Sump pump repair and installation: common questions

Why is my sump pump running but not emptying the sump?

Common causes are a blocked inlet or impeller, a failed or blocked non-return valve, a blockage in the discharge pipe or a worn pump. An engineer can check each one.

Why does my sump pump not start?

The float may be stuck, the level switch may have failed, or the power or a fuse may have tripped. If the water is rising, call us.

Should a basement sump have a second pump or an alarm?

If water in the basement would cause damage, a high-level alarm and a second pump are worth considering. We can tell you what suits your sump.

Can you replace a sump pump that is no longer made?

Usually, yes. We check what the old pump was doing and fit a suitable current pump.
